NMD Praxis and New Approaches to Asthma Therapy: The Convergence of Nutrition and Photomedicine

NMD Praxis and New Approaches to Asthma Therapy: The Convergence of Nutrition and Photomedicine: Asthma is one of the most widespread chronic inflammatory diseases worldwide, affecting approximately 300 million people. Despite the effectiveness of corticosteroids and beta-2 agonists in managing symptoms, Western medicine still offers no curative therapy. This gap is increasingly leading researchers and clinicians to explore complementary approaches, such as Traditional Chinese Medicine, acupuncture, and photomedicine. At the center of this search is NMD Praxis, a center that combines Hippocratic wisdom with modern metabolomics, offering a holistic model of care that can integrate these innovative approaches.

The Therapeutic Power of Traditional Chinese Medicine

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) has used a wide range of herbal formulas and acupuncture combinations for asthma for centuries. Modern scientific studies are gradually confirming their value: research shows that herbal preparations lead to improvement in symptoms and FEV1 values, while a systematic review and meta-analysis of fourteen studies involving 15,088 participants concluded that acupuncture significantly contributes to improving patients’ functional outcomes. Mechanisms of action include anti-inflammatory effects, inhibition of airway smooth muscle contraction, and immunomodulation.

Photomedicine and Low-Level Laser Therapy

Low-level laser therapy (LLLT) is also emerging as particularly effective in the clinical management of asthma and COPD. It is administered as laser acupuncture, transdermal surface acupuncture, or, for specific indications, as intravenous treatment. At the cellular level, LLLT exerts anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory effects: it reduces inflammatory cells (eosinophils, neutrophils) in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid, lowers pro-inflammatory cytokines, and increases the release of the anti-inflammatory mediator IL-10, thereby inhibiting tissue remodeling. Efficacy is further enhanced by using specific resonance frequencies under pulse control: Nogier B/Nutritive (584 Hz), Bahr’s “Self-Healing” (4625 Hz), and Reiniger’s lung frequency (824 Hz).

NMD Praxis and the Convergence of Approaches

NMD Praxis, is a characteristic example where these approaches can find practical application. Dr. Makri, a clinical dietitian with a doctorate from the Medical School of the University of Athens and specialization in metabolomics, has developed the NMTA® method (NeuroMetabolic & Nutritional Temperament Analysis), which combines nutrigenomics, metabolomics, and the wisdom of Hippocratic and Pythagorean thought. The central principle of the method is personalization: instead of general guidelines, it offers a strategy based on each individual’s neuroendocrine identity and metabolic dynamics, aiming to reduce inflammation and enhance the organism’s resilience.

At the NMD Praxis space, located in central Athens, specialized therapies such as phototherapy, light acupuncture, neurofeedback, and biofeedback are applied. These methods, designed individually based on the person’s temperamental profile, aim not merely at managing symptoms but at restoring the body’s functionality. Furthermore, NMD Praxis hosts the innovative Helix method, a sound therapy approach that utilizes sound and frequencies to restore neurobiological balance, in combination with each person’s temperamental profile. The use of resonance frequencies, such as those applied in LLLT, thus finds a natural relative in the therapeutic use of sound.

Toward a Holistic Management of Asthma

The convergence of nutritional medicine, photomedicine, and traditional therapeutic systems, as represented by NMD Praxis, suggests a future where asthma management will not be limited to pharmaceutical treatment. Personalized nutrition can reduce systemic inflammation, acupuncture and LLLT can act locally on the airways and nervous system, while approaches such as sound therapy can support neurobiological regulation. The challenge remains integrating these methods into a coherent, scientifically grounded protocol. NMD Praxis, with the NMTA® method and its philosophy of personalized care, represents a step in this direction — a model where ancient wisdom and modern technology collaborate to restore balance.
