5 Reasons Why Summer is Beneficial for Our Body: Summer, beyond holidays, rest, and more time in nature, offers our body a series of physiological benefits that are not always visible. Increased sun exposure and changes in daily habits positively affect key bodily functions. Here are 5 reasons why summer is good for our body.

1. Natural Increase in Vitamin D

The most obvious reason is the synthesis of vitamin D through sun exposure. Vitamin D is essential for bone health, the immune system, and many metabolic processes. Studies show that 25(OH)D levels increase significantly after summer. This means better calcium absorption, a stronger immune system, and protection against chronic diseases.

2. Improvement of the Lipid Profile

Sun exposure not only raises vitamin D but also appears to improve the lipid profile. In one study, increased sun exposure for 6 months led to a significant reduction in total cholesterol and LDL (“bad”) cholesterol. This is linked to the common metabolic precursor of vitamin D and cholesterol: when the skin is exposed to UVB radiation, 7-dehydrocholesterol is converted into vitamin D, potentially reducing the amount available for cholesterol synthesis. Accordingly, cholesterol levels tend to decrease in summer and increase in winter.

3. Reduction of Triglycerides

Although the data are more complex, some studies link the summer period with lower triglycerides, while others show an increase in summer and autumn. The positive effect may come from changes in diet (more fresh fruits and vegetables, fewer fats) and increased physical activity. Overall, the combination of more movement and lighter meals contributes to better metabolic balance.

4. Increase of “Good” Cholesterol (HDL)

HDL cholesterol protects the heart and blood vessels. Studies indicate that increased sun exposure can raise HDL. In summer, exposure to daylight appears to be associated with higher HDL levels, especially when exposure occurs during the day. Good sleep, reduced stress, and better regulation of the circadian rhythm also play a role.

5. Natural Reduction of Cortisol

Cortisol, the stress hormone, exhibits seasonal variation. According to research, cortisol levels are lower in summer compared to winter. In a study of 27,569 individuals, mean cortisol was lower in summer (386 nmol/L) and spring (384 nmol/L), with significant increases in autumn (406 nmol/L) and winter (414 nmol/L). This is linked to increased sunshine: for every hour of delay in sunrise, cortisol increased by 4.8%. In summer, the earlier sunrise better regulates the circadian rhythm, reducing stress. Additionally, exercise and contact with nature further reduce cortisol.

Summer, therefore, is not merely pleasant. It is a period when our body has the opportunity to replenish vitamins, improve its lipid profile, reduce stress, and regulate its metabolism. Enjoy the sun in moderation, stay active, and savor fresh, seasonal foods – your body will thank you.
